rainy day 03

rainy day 02

The title rainy day comes from the shape of paint strokes that the painting incorporates. It does not mean anything, and the use of colors is incidental. There was no plan to paint it, no strategy, no intention to sell, it was not meant to be displayed anywhere. I had a rare moment of not being practical, of not having to earn money, and not thinking about my future success or failure.

Independent paint strokes are floating in space. They are particles of light colliding with other particles.

basilica cistern 1/9/14

Columns from ancient temples were reused to build the massive water reservoir beneath the emperor’s palace. Huge stone heads—once sacred sculptures—were flipped upside down and used as column bases. When the religion changed, the gods' houses became just building materials.
In the end, all art is just raw material—shaped by artists into something people choose to believe in.

bad apple 2 4/14/12

My paintings are impulsive, instinctive and not processed or refined.  They can be interpreted as a conflict of space, movement, light, form, and texture.

istanbul 1/9/14

In 2013, I went to Istanbul mainly to see Hagia Sophia—one of the most important buildings ever made. I had planned to do a few plein air paintings, but the vibe of the city didn’t really support that.

green 10/16/2011

This is one of a series of bold and colorful paintings. The title green comes from the overall hues that the painting incorporates. It does not mean anything, and the use of green is incidental. There was no plan to paint it, no strategy, no intention to sell, it was not meant to be displayed anywhere. I had a rare moment of not being practical, of not having to earn money and not thinking about my future success or failure.
I had a piece of Masonite and same colors, the painting evolved from there.
Independent paint strokes are floating in space. They are particles of light colliding with other particles.

Painted before 2005, probably between 1999 and 2005, all lost.

shapes 01

It starts with very simple vector shapes, solid color, and gradients. The image is generated in a computer graphic program. Then still in Photoshop, I pretend that I am using a real brush in effect destroying computer generated perfection and creating an imperfect image.

beginning of fall

This painting is lost now. I was just starting to develop my style at the time. It was meant to capture a fall day in Riverdale Park realistically, but it ended up looking quite abstract. I painted it in 2007.

Market Lane Park 1

A grey fence blocks the horizon. Behind it used to stand a very ugly building that served as a flea market. It was demolished a few months ago, and now the fence hides a deep hole in the ground—the future foundation of a modern, probably not very ambitious, architectural project.
In front of the fence, there’s a large raised flower bed filled with hundreds of plants. I remember when they were first planted, seemingly without any plan or concept. I love watching how they grow, how nature slowly shapes them into something that feels like a real garden.

ice cube01

A small piece of ice lost in warm fog. The light refracts in the ice and illuminates the floor creating interesting shapes.
